I know this is pretty much the polar opposite of obscure... but my psychotic glee is such that I had to share. Despite Douglas Adams' death, the film version of the Guide is going to proceed! Nerds everywhere rejoice! This is one of those things that's almost-but-not-quite happened for pretty much the work's entire life, but it looks as though it's really going to work this time, as a lot of the major roles have already been cast: Martin Freeman as Arthur Mos Def as Ford Zooey Deschanel as Trillian Bill Nighy as Slartibartfast Hurrah!

I'm just happy Jay Roach is off the project. This could still turn out terribly, but it has enough potential for me to look forward to it with a glimmer of hope in my eyes. I don't know anything aobut the guy who'll be playing Dent, but Nighy should be a good Slartibartfast, and Mos Def as Ford... I could adjust.

I have to admit I was a little surprised to see Mos Def... but the more I think about it, I bet he does have the chops to handle Ford. & being a fairly unexpected choice for the role, he must have really hit the mark at the audition, so that's hopeful.
& Adams had hammered out a copy of the script that he thought was ready for production before he died... so assuming they stick close to his draft & don't totally muff the casting of Zaphod it should be safe.
I'd better go knock on wood now though, just in case...

Hold on here, where are these people from? I only know Bill Nighy, though Martin Freeman does ring a bell.

I hate to have to say it... Mos Def is, of all things, an american rapper. However, he has taken a pretty diverse set of film roles & I think he can pull it off. I'm not familiar with Zooey Deschanel either. Evidently she's known for Elf with WIll Ferrell. You could say she looked "vaguely arabic", though. Being here in the States without the BBC , I'm not familiar with Martin Freeman or Bill Nighy, but apparently they're pretty highly thought of in British tv. Most of the controversy I've heard is about the inclusion of non-British actors in the cast, specifically Mos Def as Ford.

There's talk about Sam Rockwell as Zaphod. I'm having trouble seeing it, but then again I have trouble picturing Zaphod at all. I love Rockwell, so if this is true it could work out fine for me.

Rockwell is indeed Zaphod, according to douglasadams.com. I think I can relax now... it seems to be in able hands.

This is the first time I've heard of a movie being made out of the Guide, and I just hope they film it as close as possible to the original draft/script.

They've chosen the voice of Marvin: Warwick Davis, best known for his role as the bloodthirsty leprechaun in the ongoing Leprechaun series.

Come to think of it, you're right... that's probably what he's known for, especially among the demographic that's likely to be browsing here.

I think he was in Harry Potter too, and I'm sure he was one of the main Ewoks. Then again, just about every short person in Hollywood was an Ewok.
Must be a nice change of pace for him not to play "The Dwarf" yet again.

Have you seen the Marvin suit? He IS playing the dwarve. But I thought he just operated the suit, and that someone else'd do the voice.
